The American Cancer Society would like to remind everyone that this year’s Relay For Life of Kendall County will be from 3 to 11 p.m. Saturday, June 9, at Go For It Sports Dome, 9231 Galena Road north of Yorkville.
So far, 16 teams have registered in the local Relay and have been raising funds for the fight against cancer in Kendall County. Those teams and donors have thus far brought in more than $13,000, but more is needed and more is coming.
Consider coming out this Saturday evening, whether you are a member of a Relay team or not. Teams are welcome to come in and set up between 1 and 2 p.m. and the public is invited for the opening ceremony at 3 p.m.
Cancer survivors are the guests of honor at every Relay and walk the first lap around the track after the opening ceremony. Dinner is then provided later for all survivors and their caregivers.
"If you are a cancer survivor, even if you have not registered yet, please join us," said a news release from the event organizers.
If you have never been to a Relay For Life before, it is both a celebration of life for all survivors and a time to honor those who have not survived their diagnosis. Many activities are scheduled to help create a fun time as part of the celebration. Food and refreshments will also be available, but teams are welcome to bring their own picnics, too. Tailgating will be allowed in the parking lot, but no campfires.
At dusk, the lights in the dome will be dimmed for the luminaria ceremony. Luminaria bags are for sale online and at the Relay to place around the track in memory of those who have passed and to honor those who are still fighting the disease or who have survived, sometimes for many years.
