Helmar Hearts & Hands for Hope is planning a mission trip to Tijuana, Mexico. The group will partner with YWAM and the Homes for Hope program along with missionaries Ellie (Swenson) and Omar Gallo.

The “hope” of the group is to construct two 20-by-20-foot furnished homes for families in need. The group includes more than 40 local adults and youth who will provide the physical labor needed to build the homes, but the group is seeking financial help to assist in covering the cost of the materials.

The cost to build each unfurnished home is $8,050, and the amount goes up to $9,875 when basic furniture is included.

With Thrivent’s Kickstarter donation, the group earned more than $900 toward the total goal of $19,750. To date, $4,882 has been raised from a variety of fundraisers including helicopter rides, a soup and sandwich luncheon, and an ongoing number board in which people select a number and donate that much money toward the houses.

Another fundraiser is planned for 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 20. The group is holding a bake sale, complete with Norwegian goodies, to compliment the annual Kumla Dinner hosted by Helmar’s Food Pantry.

On Saturday, April 14, the group will host Tim Hanig, a magician and entertainer who offers a live show perfect for all ages. Dinner will be available before the show for a free-will donation.

Financial help is welcome and appreciated at any time. Donations can be send to Helmar Lutheran Church, 11935 Lisbon Road, Newark, IL 60541, with Homes for Hope on the memo line.
