5:15 p.m. reception, 6 p.m. dinner Tuesday, Jan. 16, at Grandma’s Table Restaurant, 1700 Douglas Road. Dinner includes a choice of three entrées (fish, chicken or beef), soup or salad, dinner rolls, vegetables, dessert and nonalcoholic drink. Cost is $20. A lower cost salad entrée can be purchased for $12. The speaker will be Ryan Dowd, executive director of Hesed House in Aurora, the second largest homeless shelter in Illinois.

New Life for Old Bags

10:30 a.m. to noon the second Saturday of each month – next, Jan. 13 – at the Plano Community Library, 15 W. North St. Volunteers turn discarded plastic shopping bags into plastic yarn to be crocheted into sleeping mats for the homeless. Donations of plastic bags can be left at the library. Open Roads ABATE

6 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 13, at the Plano American Legion, 510 E. Dearborn St., Plano. Topics to be discussed are the chili cook-off, pool tournament, book run, group rides and updates on the legislature. Everyone is invited. The meeting will be followed by the chapter Christmas party. Drop-in Tai Chi
