Sandwich fundraiser to help local needy families

Santa and Mrs. Claus will visit Sandwich on Saturday, Dec. 9, to attend an event that helps needy families in the area.

The event, at Eclipse Salon, 40 E. Railroad St. in Sandwich, will feature free pictures with Santa and Mrs. Claus, cookies and milk. Guests are asked to bring canned goods, a new unwrapped toy or a monetary donation to be given to at least one family in need in Sandwich.

Last year, the event helped give Christmas presents and much-needed food to the Otte family in Shorewood. Jeffrey Otte, a full-time firefighter and paramedic and single father, was struggling to take care of his seven children. His oldest child, Brandon, was diagnosed with a rare type of cancer that causes an excess of white blood cells to accumulate in the body and form tumors. Some of his other children have cognitive and developmental delays, including autism.

Danielle St. Laurent, owner and stylist at Eclipse Salon, said that hosting the annual event is one way to help local families and give back to the community. In addition to donating the collected items this year, Eclipse Salon also will provide a Walmart gift card to the families that are helped.

“I was raised by a single mom with four kids, and now that I’m a mom myself, I know that struggle,” she said. “Depending on the amount of donations we receive, we will be helping at least one family in Sandwich this year. For me, it’s important to help others, especially at Christmas.”
