The Voice of Democracy essay contest is a scholarship program presented by the Veterans of Foreign Wars for high school students.
Each year, almost 40,000 high school students compete for more than $2 million in scholarships and incentives. Students compete by writing and recording an audio essay on an annual patriotic theme.
This year on Veterans Day, members of Sandwich VFW Post 1486 and its auxiliary members presented the awards at a Veterans Day program at Sandwich High School.
Winners of the contest were Emily Floyd, first place; Michael Gargano, second place; and Cory Griffin, third place.
"The members of VFW Post 1486 and its auxiliary would like to thank everyone who took part in making this a successful program," said a news release from the VFW.
