The Plano American Legion Leon Burson Auxiliary Post 395 is holding a donation drive to collect food, toiletries and other essentials to send overseas to soldiers from Plano, Sandwich and the Fox Valley area. A quarter auction will be held to help cover the postage costs of shipping the boxes.
Items being asked for include: beef jerky, individual serving packs of coffee, powdered drink mix, protein powder and protein bars, hard candy, nuts or trail mix, hand sanitizer, lip balm, sunscreen, stationary, headphones, playing cards, magazines, or books. Locations for donating the items are spread across Plano, including the public library, the Legion, Office Works, the BP station and other gas stations in town. A full list of locations and items can be obtained by contacting organizer Lori Minick at 630-301-9389.
To help raise money to cover the shipping cost of the packages, the Legion is hosting a quarter auction on Sunday, Oct. 15. The quarter auction works by having participants purchase paddles for $5 for one paddle, or three paddles for $10. Though the Legion will have about $150 in quarters, participants are asked to bring their own quarters as well, as the amount of quarters for a bid depends on the value of the item. Each paddle will be numbered, with a corresponding chip for each paddle. If a chip is pulled, and that bidder has paid their quarters, they will win the item.
“The name of the game is volume,” organizer Becky Nelson said. “You want to get a lot of people bidding on those baskets, and then it’s just a matter of luck.”
Items for the donation drive will be collected until Nov. 15. Items can be dropped off at one of the locations in Plano, or at the Legion from 1 until 7 p.m., Tuesday through Sunday. Doors open for the auction at 2:30 p.m., with the auction beginning at 3 p.m.
