To the Editor:
I want to thank all those who came to the Fern Dell Museum for birthday cake and punch on May 7. Also thank you for the cards and donations to the 36 Cent Fund – over $400 that will be used for projects benefiting Fern Dell Historic Association and the Village of Newark. A heartfelt thank-you also goes out to Wendy Bernard for organizing the event.
The 36 Cent Fund originated over two decades ago by Terry Larson, Lew Huntly and Lowell Mathre honoring the local 36th Regiment of the U.S. Infantry that fought in the Civil War.
Since its inception, money donated has been used to purchase a plaque of Newark events, the lighted wooden windmill in the park, gazebo in the park, refinishing the flooring in Fern Dell Museum, and shingles for the awning.
The fund also helps with the upkeep on the Town Clock next to the Misner Blacksmith Shop, as well as a portion of the monthly electric bills. A flag and flagpole for Millington-Newark Cemetery were purchased with the 36 Cent Fund. The Historic Association plans to install new lighting in the north room of the museum enabling us to more effectively display the many artifacts that have been donated.
