Has 911 been overpromoted?

Last month, I went to a convention for the disabled. As I was signing in, I was approached about a letter. I said that one letter I had written was to Mrs. (Kay) Hatcher, state representative.

I requested that 911 be more reliable. I got no further. Many thought 911 was fail-safe. One woman said that she cannot get out of bed by herself and she is alone except for a few hours a day when she has a personal assistant. She thought if she had trouble, she just needed to dial 911 on her cell phone.

All afternoon people came to discuss 911 and how reliable or unreliable it is.

Police cars and signs at the end of our lane say “Call 911.” Even the American Heart Association says to call 911.

Have we overpromoted it?
