SANDWICH — Timing is everything. And Claudia Bullington believed the time was right to open a women’s consignment shop in Sandwich.

Divas II opened April 3 at 4742 E. 2750th Road, near Wildwood and across from Lake Holiday. In less than a month, the shop boasts 20 consignors, the Lake Holiday resident said.

“After helping my daughter move her business twice to accommodate growth, I thought our little town of Sandwich could use a shop like this,” she said. Her daughter owns the original Divas near Knoxville, Tenn. In its third year of business, Bullington said it is again busting at the seams.

Both women believe the economy is the major factor in the growth of consignment shops. “Who can afford today’s high prices? Who can afford gas to drive to the big malls? With stay-at-home moms needing to go back to work, who can afford a new wardrobe?” Bullington asked.

She said Divas II can provide women with nice clothes and accessories at affordable prices in a boutique environment. And the shop doesn’t cater to smaller women. Divas II carries sizes from 10 up to plus sizes.

“I looked around the area and just don’t see a lot of the 5-, 7- and 9-sized women,” Bullington said. “I want to give all women a place to shop where they can feel comfortable.”

Bullington said she hasn’t had a lot of buyers, yet, but a large number of women stopping to browse. She hopes her Miss Diva mascot, well known in the area of her daughter’s shop, will become familiar around Sandwich.

“The first weekend I was open, I dressed my nephew (who is 26) up as Miss Diva and had him holding a sign, waving at cars. He lost a bet and was a good sport about it,” Bullington said with a laugh.
